KEKEMAN CORNER WITH PRINCEWILL DANIEL
ARTICLE:
Healthy Life as our greatest possession has to do with the state of being
alive. No matter what we have, being alive or having life is the greatest
possession that we have. Life does not therefore consist of all the mansions
and skyscrapers, all the exotic cars (or machines as some may want to call
them) or all the expensive clothing and pieces of jewelries that we have.
Neither does life consist of the fat bank accounts or oil well licenses that
some people can boast of. Rather life is simply being alive. If life is therefore
the greatest possession that we have, then how do we handle life?

You will agree with me that most people who are
blessed with worldly possessions go to very great extent to protect those
possessions. Some go to the extent of securing bank safes or vaults to keep
their most expensive or priceless possessions. Some even have personal safes or
vaults built in their homes to keep and safeguard all their valuable
possessions. But the funniest thing is that most of these very wealthy people
sometimes appear careless about their lives vis-a-vis poor attitude towards
their health. However, I want to state here that it does not matter whether we
are wealthy or poor before we should be concerned about taking good care of
ourselves. This is because sickness does not respect financial or social
status. A rich person can fall sick just like a poor person can.
We must
know that it is only a healthy person that can function properly and be useful
first to himself, then to his family, to the society where he lives in and to
his country. That is why it is often said that health is wealth. We can only
claim to be truly healthy when we do not become a burden or liability to the
people around us.
This is why we should ensure to take good care of ourselves at all
times. This we can do by eating properly i.e. balanced diets which comprises of
proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins as well as intake of adequate
water. It is recommended that an adult should take at least six to eight
glasses of water daily to stay adequately hydrated. Also, our meals should
comprise of vegetables and fruits, cereals, milk, eggs, fish and flesh from
poultry or animals. Most vegetables, fruits and cereals contain the right
proportions of the proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals that our
bodies require to grow, to be strong and to stay healthy.
When we make the mistake of treating Healthy Life shabbily like some
people are in the habit of doing, we create room for our bodies to become weak
and sometimes out rightly becomes sick. Whenever we are weak, we won’t be able
to give peak performance in whatever we do. The worst is when we allow
ourselves to fall sick. Once we are sick, we will become dysfunctional in
almost every aspects of our lives. We will lost valuable man power hours due to
the sickness. There will be gross decrease in our productivity level and some
sickness will make us become totally dependent on the assistance of others
around us at all times. When this is the case, people around us will equally
become seriously affected in negative ways as our sickness will automatically
alter their own lives in order to give us the required care and assistance. And
in the long run, these people may become dissatisfied with us and this can
sometimes lead to them abandoning us altogether so that they can move on with
their own lives. We may have seen around us cases of abandonment of sick people
by their relatives. This is the worst case scenario for those who are bogged
down with terminal sicknesses.
It therefore means that we must do everything possible to take
good care of ourselves and protect ourselves from being sick. Apart from the
many negative aspects of being sick, the greatest loss from being sick is if
the sickness finally results to death. It is people you have left behind that
will now enjoy all the fruits of your labour and the massive wealth you amassed
after your departure from this earth. How so sad!
It is very essential that both at our homes and in our schools,
everybody should be painstakingly taught the importance and necessity of taking
good care of ourselves right from when we are still young so that it does not
become strange to us later on in our lives when we hear about the need to look
after ourselves well.
As it is often said that the most important meal of the day in our
lives on a daily basis is the breakfast but how many of us pay attention to
this? Because of living life on the fast lane these days, many are in the habit
of skipping morning meals with varied excuses. When we consciously or
unconsciously keep on weakening our bodies by denying ourselves the basic
nutrients required by the body to fight any invasion of sickness causing germs,
then we find ourselves most often caught unprepared by any kind of sickness
that is being induced by the invading germs.
Many people hear for hearing sake, the benefits of following a
carefully prepared menu timetable that will consist of all the classes of food
in their right proportions to make every meal a balanced diet. But how many of
these people (I am particularly referring to married women now) really sit down
to draw up their own meals’ timetable for their families? If you ask them the
reason why, the first reply will be that following such meals’ regimen is
possible for those who are rich. But can I tell such people something? The
truth is that you don’t need to have your hands high up in the heavens, before
you can afford to give your family balanced diets per time. All you need is
wisdom on how to apply what you have in your hand money-wise to get what you want
food-wise or balanced diet-wise.
All you need to do is to keep your ears to the ground and open
wide your eyes to hear and to see and know all the food items available per
season and become wise as to how to combine them to still give you balanced
diets or meals per time. Sometimes if you become streetwise as to how you
combine available things to have your balanced meals, you and your family
members will turn out looking healthier than people from homes with so much
monies.
I am writing this article to encourage you to take a little closer
look at yourself now more than how it has always been in the past. Protect your
life because it is the greatest possession that you have. If God has blessed
you with the goodies of life that does not foreclose the need for you to still
consciously place much value first on your life because that is all that you
really have. If you form the habit of valuing your life and taking good care of
yourself, you have the guarantee of living a longer, healthier and fulfilled
life devoid of battling with various debilitating sicknesses which are common
to mankind. But if on the other hand, you are careless about your life and
overlook taking good care of yourself by exposing yourself to disease-carrying
germs and then you fall sick in the process, then you can be rest assured that
you will have a long running battle with sicknesses because the dreadful thing
is that the presence of one type of sickness within your body can give rise to
one or more other sicknesses.
Lest I forget before concluding this article, let me inform you
that you should not play with the aspect of Healthy Life As Our Greatest Possession.
The great benefits of always engaging yourself in daily or regular exercise
routines cannot be overemphasized. Apart from keeping you in shape by helping
in firming and toning your muscles as well as helping you to feel relaxed which
is a good sleep inducer, it also helps to sharpen your intellect and keep you
mentality alert. It equally helps your digestive system, the circulatory system
and the nervous system to regulate themselves and function properly in their
various roles.
I am sure that those in the medical professions particularly the
dieticians will agree with me that life is our greatest possession and that as
much as it lies in our power, it is needful for us to strive to be in good
health at all times. I think that valuing our life and enjoying life to the
fullest while it lasts devoid of all forms of sicknesses should be our priority
and most important pre-occupation since at the long run it will definitely turn
out that life is what we really have after-all as our only greatest possession
and not all the earthly possessions which ultimately belongs to the moths to be
eaten says the holy book. What do you think?
